Your Complete Guide to Setting Up and Securing Your Ledger Hardware Wallet

Welcome to Ledger Setup

Welcome to the official Ledger hardware wallet setup guide. A Ledger device is a physical hardware wallet that stores your cryptocurrency private keys offline, providing the highest level of security for your digital assets. Unlike software wallets or exchange accounts, your crypto remains protected from online hackers, malware, and phishing attacks.

This step-by-step guide will walk you through the complete setup process, from unboxing your device to making your first transaction. Whether you're new to cryptocurrency or an experienced trader, following these instructions will ensure your assets remain safe and accessible only to you.

Why Ledger Hardware Wallets Are Essential

Offline Security

Your private keys never leave the device and are stored in a secure chip, protecting against remote attacks.

Full Control

You own your crypto completely. No third party can freeze, access, or control your funds.

Multi-Currency Support

Store Bitcoin, Ethereum, and thousands of other cryptocurrencies and tokens on one device.

Recovery Protection

Your 24-word recovery phrase ensures you can restore access even if your device is lost or damaged.

1

Unbox and Initialize Your Ledger Device

Check the packaging: Ensure the box is sealed and hasn't been tampered with. Authentic Ledger devices come in tamper-evident packaging.

Remove contents: Inside you'll find your Ledger device, USB cable, recovery phrase cards, and instruction booklet.

Connect your device: Use the included USB cable to connect your Ledger to your computer or smartphone.

Power on: Your Ledger will automatically power on and display a welcome message. Press both buttons to begin setup.

Choose setup option: Select "Set up as new device" to create a new wallet, or "Restore from recovery phrase" if you're recovering an existing wallet.

Security Tip:

Never use a Ledger device that arrives with a pre-filled recovery phrase or if the packaging appears damaged or resealed.
2

Set Up a Secure PIN Code

Choose PIN length: Your PIN must be between 4 and 8 digits. Longer PINs provide better security.

Enter your PIN: Use the device buttons to scroll through numbers and select each digit. Press both buttons to confirm each number.

Confirm your PIN: You'll be asked to re-enter your PIN to verify you remember it correctly.

Store it safely: Never write your PIN down with your recovery phrase. Keep them separate.

PIN Best Practices:

  • Avoid obvious combinations like 1234 or repeating numbers
  • Don't use your birthday or phone number
  • Choose an 8-digit PIN for maximum security
  • After 3 incorrect PIN attempts, your device will reset for security
3

Download and Install Ledger Live

Visit the official site: Go to ledger.com/start and click "Download Ledger Live" for your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux).

Install the application: Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. The app is available for desktop and mobile devices.

Launch Ledger Live: Open the application and click "Get Started" to begin the setup wizard.

Select your device: Choose your Ledger model (Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Stax) from the list.

Connect your Ledger: Follow the prompts to connect your device and unlock it by entering your PIN.

Critical Warning:

Only download Ledger Live from the official ledger.com website. Fake versions of the app exist that can steal your crypto. Never trust links from emails or social media.
4

Save Your 24-Word Recovery Phrase

Write down each word: Your Ledger will display 24 words one at a time. Write them on the recovery sheet in the exact order shown.

Double-check accuracy: Verify each word carefully. A single mistake means you won't be able to recover your wallet.

Confirm your phrase: The device will ask you to verify several words from your recovery phrase to ensure you wrote them down correctly.

Store securely: Keep your recovery sheet in a safe, fireproof, and waterproof location. Consider using a metal backup solution for maximum protection.

Recovery Phrase Security Rules:

  • NEVER take a photo of your recovery phrase or store it digitally
  • NEVER share it with anyone, including Ledger support
  • NEVER enter it on any website or app (except when restoring to a new Ledger)
  • Anyone with your recovery phrase has complete access to your crypto
  • Ledger will NEVER ask you for your recovery phrase
5

Add Cryptocurrency Accounts

Open Ledger Live: In the app, click "Accounts" in the sidebar, then click "+ Add account."

Choose a cryptocurrency: Select the crypto you want to manage (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) from the list.

Install the app on device: If prompted, Ledger Live will install the necessary crypto app on your device. Approve the installation on your Ledger.

Name your account: Give your account a descriptive name (e.g., "Main Bitcoin") and click "Add account."

Repeat for other currencies: Add accounts for all cryptocurrencies you plan to store on your Ledger.

Tip:

Ledger supports over 5,500 cryptocurrencies and tokens. For ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, you only need to add an Ethereum account—tokens will appear automatically once received.
6

Receiving and Sending Cryptocurrency

Receiving Crypto

Click "Receive": In Ledger Live, select the account you want to receive funds in and click "Receive."

Connect your device: Make sure your Ledger is connected and unlocked. Open the corresponding crypto app on your device.

Verify the address: Ledger Live will display your receiving address. Check that this EXACT address appears on your Ledger device screen.

Copy and share: Once verified, copy the address and share it with the sender or exchange.

Sending Crypto

Click "Send": Select the account you want to send from and click "Send."

Enter recipient address: Paste or scan the recipient's wallet address. Double-check every character.

Enter amount: Type the amount you want to send and review the network fees.

Review on device: Check all transaction details on your Ledger screen. Verify the recipient address and amount.

Approve transaction: Press both buttons on your Ledger to approve and broadcast the transaction.

Important:

Always verify addresses on your Ledger device screen, not just on your computer. This protects against malware that might alter addresses in Ledger Live.
7

Enable Key Security Features

Passphrase (25th Word) - Advanced Option

Add an extra word to your 24-word recovery phrase for additional security. This creates a hidden wallet that can only be accessed with the passphrase.

Set this up in Settings → Security → Passphrase on your Ledger device.

Enable Auto-Lock

Configure your Ledger to automatically lock after a period of inactivity for added protection.

Adjust in Settings → Security → Auto-lock on your device.

Use Genuine Check

Ledger Live can verify your device is genuine. Go to Manager in Ledger Live and follow the genuine check prompt when you first connect.

Enable Password Lock in Ledger Live

Add a password to your Ledger Live app for an extra layer of protection on your computer.

Set up in Ledger Live → Settings → Password lock.

8

Keep Your Firmware Updated

Check for updates: Open Ledger Live and go to "Manager." Connect your Ledger and enter your PIN.

Install firmware: If an update is available, click "Update firmware" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Don't disconnect: Keep your device connected throughout the update process. Your device will restart automatically.

Reinstall apps: After a firmware update, you may need to reinstall your crypto apps from the Manager.

Why update?

Firmware updates include security improvements, new features, and support for additional cryptocurrencies. Always keep your device up to date.
